そんなわけで、何故か傾倒するファンの多いプログレを聴く機会などは皆無に等しく、前職の同僚の影響でドリーム・シアターを聴くようになるまではまったくのノーチェックだった。とはいえ、キング・クリムゾンやらピンク・フロイドやらの楽曲を断片すら聴いたことがないのかといえばそんなはずもなく、要は意識的に、あるいは好んでは聴いてこなかったというほどの意味である。
こんなぼくが先の記事に引っかかったのは、キース・エマーソンのせいである。実をいうとぼくは、彼の名をプログレ界の旗手として聞き覚えていたわけではない。出会いは“幻魔大戦”
クライマックスで流れる思いの外キャッチーなメロディと、壮大なSF世界にマッチしたシンセサイザーのトーンはとても印象的だ。ぼくが唯一キース・エマーソンの音として記憶していたのが、この'CHALLENGE OF THE PSIONICS FIGHTERS'という曲だったのである。
劇中で頻繁に流れるバッハのアレンジについても、キース・エマーソンの来歴を知って聴けば、そうきたか、と膝を打ったのかもしれない。けれども、残念ながらプログレのプの字も、EL＆PのEの字も知らなかったぼくには、さしたる感慨もなかったのである。
こんな出会い方をしたぼくにとって、キース・エマーソンの音はヴァンゲリスのそれに近しいものとして記憶された。“炎のランナー”
そんな経緯があって、今漸く手にしたEL&Pのアルバムは、キース・エマーソンの力技を思い知るのに最適なライブ盤である。音質に不安はあったものの、マスターを新たにして改善されたのか、元々それなりにマトモだったのか、古いライブ録音としては十分にクリアな音だった。
あの有名なピアノ曲の一節が流れてきた瞬間、"幻魔大戦"の音が脳裏に蘇る。ムソルグスキーの曲であるにも関わらず、それは紛れもなくキース・エマーソンの音だということだろう。プログレ特有の理屈っぽさみたいなものは案外希薄である。
想像以上に聴きやすい。
ぼくの耳には、やっぱりキャッチーに聴こえる。難解だとか、技術偏重だとかいうような印象はほとんどない。ピンク・フロイドのように陰鬱な精神世界が口を開けて待っているようなこともない。実はとてもバランスの取れた一般受けしてもおかしくないアルバムなんじゃなかろうか。
ちょっとそんな風に思った。

This domain appears to recieve a large ammount of visitors. How do you advertise it? It offers a nice unique spin on things. I guess having something authentic or substantial to talk about is the most important thing.
